It is the code that identifies a certain number of tests the lubricant must pass in order to be qualified. To pass a specification means to warrant the minimum quality required by the actual specification.
Different types of specifications exist: the specifications required by international associations of producers and manufacturers (API, ACEA) and the specifications required by single manufacturers, established to meet the particular needs of their vehicles (VW, MB, GM). These enhance a lubricant and make it particularly suitable for a specific type of engine. On the other hand international specifications are necessary steps to be able to define an internationally approved lubricant.
